wood stone finish & care
bar
There are dozens for ways to finish wood, including shellac, polyurethanes, stains and oils.  We do not use any stains at all; in fact we abhor them. Natural wood has a wide range of hues; if one wants a dark finish, why not select a dark wood?

Finish

Wood: We finish all our wood tables with linseed oil. This brings out the grain of the wood. It also soaks into the wood and inhibits water and other liquids from penetrating and staining. The oil has the virtue of never drying, cracking, pealing or flaking. It is also nontoxic. See the difference on the wood samples to the right!

Stone: All the stone comes sealed with a transparent sealer. With proper care, no resealing will ever be necessary.

CARE

Wood:
Our wood furniture is very easy to care for, and if properly maintained will last virtually forever. To prevent staining the wood, spills should be immediately wiped up. The wood can be safely cleaned with a mild soap and warm water. Please be sure not to leave standing water on the table. If wood has any topical stains that do not wash off with the mild soap, you can scour the stain with either 000 grade steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad. Finally, if the wood gets dings, or scratches, these can be repaired by sanding with 220 grit sandpaper (be careful not to scratch the stone with the sandpaper), and then applying several coats of oil. To retain stain resistance of the wood, the wood must be periodically retreated with oil. Once a year or so, you should reapply an oil treatment. You can use linseed oil, tung oil, Danish oil, or other equivalents.

Stone: As with the wood, spills should be immediately wiped off the stone. Coasters should always be used under drink glasses! While granite is virtually indestructible, marble, onyx and travertine require much more attention. The last three are all susceptible to staining, especially from acids (e.g. orange or grapefruit juice), alcohol or oils. All stone surfaces can be cleaned with warm water and a mild soap. Do NOT use Scotch-Brite pads on the marble, onyx or travertine. Additionally, be sure not to use cleaners containing lemon, vinegar or other acids.
